The Cotton Gin

The patent for Eli Whitney’s Cotton Gin was granted in 1794 and was officially validated in 1807. This invention significantly helped put an end to slavery because it made slave labor economically unfeasible for cotton plantations that used it as their primary means of picking cotton. Whitney’s invention was able to produce 20 bales of cotton for every one produced by slave labor.

Photography

Until 1840, people turned to expensive portrait artists if they wanted to have a picture of themselves to hang on the wall. But that all changed with the introduction of photography in the mid-19th century. This technology evolved fairly rapidly and helped lead to the first motion picture cameras that were invented in the 1890s.

Electricity

Can you imagine what life would be like without electricity? The extensive research on electricity conducted by Benjamin Franklin in the 18th century helped pave the way for so many more incredible future inventions such as the light bulb, television, and refrigerator. Electricity truly changed society and it also made life safer by reducing the fire hazards associated with candle light or gas-fed street lamps.

The Rifle

Muskets and other older forms of rifles had been around for centuries, but the modern-day rifle was developed in the mid-19th century and it quickly became one of the most popular pieces of firearm technology in the country. Providing better accuracy and range, rifle technology has only continued to improve throughout the years and now there is a wide variety to rifle types to choose from.

The Telegraph

Samuel Morse and Alfred Vail invented the telegraph in 1837 and by 1843 Congress had passed legislation to wire the entire country with this technology, facilitating a boom in telecommunication.
